I first used this combination on the Wonderland Trail and didn’t have a bit of trouble with rodents or bear or anything for that matter! The ZPacks Roll Top Blast Food Bag is lightweight, water resistant, inexpensive and tough. It’s made of Cuben Fiber fabric and has a both a Velcro strip closure and a roll-top closure. This thing held up great on the WT and I’ve been using it ever since. It has a built-in loop near the latch with a mini carbiner that Zpacks includes with the purchase.
I use the Loksak Opsak inside of the Blast bag for a couple of reasons. First off, sooner or later I’ll end up spilling something on the Blast bag and end up spoiling it with some kind of food or drink. Secondly, it’s an added odor blocker and in my book the first line of defense is keeping the smell contained. Even though the Blast food bag is priced inexpensively, I like to keep my gear in decent shape and the Loksak helps me accomplish that.
Good Stuff…
Cuban fiber bags aren’t even squirrel proof – lost half my food supplies when a squirrel ate through it – made big holes – and it was never waterproof.
I’m sorry to hear that Joyce. I’m curious a to whether that happened with one particular bag or more than one bag.
My friends and I have yet to experience any animal malfunctions with our dyneema/cuben fiber bags in our travels. We generally hang our bags so they would be fair game for rodents, raccoons or mice. Very strange.
