I used some of this GEAR AID FREESOLE 1OZ KIT W/BLACK COLORANT on a pair of my boots that I had damaged, about a month ago and was so amazed at the end result that I had to write about it! It sets up like a solid piece of rubber and it’s durable as all get out.
When I first began working with it I was unsure of how the final product would look or if it would be durable but I have to say that I was very pleased. This isn’t your mommas Shoe Goo it’s the real deal It appears to be somewhat self-leveling which really helps in getting a uniform application that not only looks good but also is consistent so you don’t have to put it under a microscope to get right. Plus, from what I’ve seen it adheres to itself you can build it up without compromising its tenacity or durability.
I was wearing my Asolo Fugitive hiking boots on a winter trip last year in Garden of the Gods / Lusk Creek Canyon and it was extremely cold in the first night in this canyon where we were camping. So, in my attempt to get warm, I had inched a little too close to the fire and compromised the glue that holds plastic toe cap to the boot. Well this caused the toe cap to separate from the boot at the point where it wraps up over the toe. This left a pretty good sized gap which would let moisture into the boot and get caked up with mud and debris over time. So I purchased some GEAR AID FREESOLE 1OZ KIT W/BLACK COLORANT and patched it up and that was my first dealing with the product. This stuff stuck to the plastic and rubber like it was bonded at the molecular level so needless to say I was sold right there.
After seeing the final results I went ahead applied more of it to other hiking shoes that had separation issues at the toe cap as well and went on to use it as a preventative measure / additional bumper on a few other hiking shoes.
At this point, I’ve worn most of the footwear that I patched with the GEAR AID FREESOLE 1OZ KIT W/BLACK COLORANT to on at least one or two hikes or backpacking trips and so far so good. This stuff is great so now I’m thinking what else can this stuff be used for???!!!
Save yourself the hassle of having to clean your hands by wearing thin latex gloves when you apply this stuff.
I’ll do a follow-up with the durability aspect down the road.
UPDATE*I’ve worn one pair of hiking shoes and one pair of hiking boots on at least three separate backpack trips with Freesole on them and still going strong. Absolutely no signs of peeling or flaking. Great stuff!
