I think it’s pretty safe to say that this is my new favorite pullover jacket. It replaced my Marmot Calen 1/2 Zip Pullover that accompanied me on many backpacking trips.  Now in this case I didn’t exactly trim weight but instead gained a few ounces which is easy to accept when you compare the warmth factor.  And in my opinion that warmth factor is a direct result of the Primaloft Gold insulation used in the pullover.  Now if you couple that insulation with an outer layer of Pertex nylon you have a winning combination.  This is, in my opinion the definite better deal of the two.

Upon receiving this pullover the first time I was immediately impressed with the hand of the material due to the Pertex used.  Now I’ve felt Pertex before and it has an incredible feel that is in my opinion unlike other nylon materials that I’ve ever felt.  Quite simply put it doesn’t feel like nylon because it has a soft hand that is very comfortable.  No wonder Pertex is a premium material – it’s just plain awesome.

The thinness of this jacket is quite evident and makes you wonder whether it could actually provide any warmth at all.  But it’s Primaloft Gold and although this is my first experience with the Gold version I’ve experienced other versions of Primaloft and it’s outstanding.  I’ve never had a synthetic insulation provide as much warmth as Primaloft.  Simply amazing stuff!  From my experience with synthetics I think it’s some of the best stuff out there.  Here is a link for more information on Primaloft technologies.

I haven’t had a chance to put this pullover to the test in the mountains but I’ve worn it out casually running errands and it’s very comfortable with excellent warmth.  Now I’m not certain how well it will insulate while standing around in very cold weather but I’m more than willing to put it to the test.  I think it will make an excellent non-winter jacket for any of my hikes in the mountains.  I’ll be updating this blog with the comfort, warmth and overall durability in the near future.
