Needle Arch in the Big South Fork National Recreation Area is just a mile or so from the Sawmill Trailhead.  This is a great winter hiking area.  Check it out here

I have so many titanium pots and cups that I wonder why I need more but I always come up with a reason.  This purchase was fueled by the want to both lighten my pack weight and condense gear size in the never ending battle that all backpackers partake.  Must go lighter!  Must go smaller!  These lightweight items are all geared primarily toward tougher hikes and thru-hikes where I want to be as light, simple and compact as possible all while staying within my comfort range.

This 550ml pot was a definite move in the lightening direction and if you take a look at my post Toaks Titanium 600ML Pot you will see my journey first going to the 600ml pot in order to go smaller and lighter(like everyone else).

Side by side comparison from far left. Snow Peak Mini Solo Pot 4.0oz / Toaks 600ml Pot 3.3oz / Toaks 550ml Pot 2.6oz

I first found and purchased the TOAKS Titanium 600ml Pot the other week with this in mind but then I found the even lighter and more compact TOAKS LIGHT Titanium 550ml Pot that I’m featuring in this in this post.  I’m really excited to use this 550ml pot for a thru-hike that I will be going on in 2016.  Basically my original Snow Peak Mini Solo Pot weighed in at 4.0oz; the TOAKS Titanium 600ml Pot weighed in at 3.3oz and the TOAKS LIGHT Titanium 550ml Pot weighed in at approximately 2.6oz.

Here are the specs for this pot straight from Toaks Outdoors website:

Slight modification to this pot if you purchase it…

As with most single wall titanium pots, by the time your water is boiling the handles are very hot and if you attempt to grab them they will give you a nice burn that will stay with you for the rest of the night.  That’s why I installed some Du-Bro 223 1/8″ x 2′ Large Super Blue Silicone Tubing over the handles with a little help from some household dish soap applied to the handles.  It doesn’t take much soap to assist with the task of installing the tubing but it’s so worth it to keep the fingers insulated.  I removed the bottom end of the handle from the slot that’s tack welded onto the pot and slid the tubing on then re-inserted the handle back into the slot. I had done this to my Snow Peak Titanium pots some time ago so I knew it would do the trick.  The handles on my Snow Peak titanium pots are just a tad larger diameter so they require the Du-Bro 222 3/32″ x 2′ Medium Super Blue Silicone Tubing.
