My current go-to pot for fast or long distance hikes is the Snow Peak Titanium Mini Solo Cookset and it has served me well for quite some time now.  I really love this set but there are a few things about it that don’t totally work for me.  First off, I usually leave the small cup at home and take a large cut-down Gatorade or Power Aid bottle instead because the small cup just doesn’t hold much.  Secondly, the pot doesn’t have any graduations on it at all which doesn’t make sense to me.  Snow Peak put graduations on the cup but nothing on the pot which I can somewhat understand but not really.  Needless to say I usually make a rough guess of how much water is in the pot which backfires sometimes.

So I got to thinking, why not find a pot that has the graduations on it and quit guessing as well as reduce the size of the pot.  This would kill two birds with one stone because the 830ml pot in this set is total overkill for me and my style of cooking/eating.  I always eat out of steam bags and never or almost never put food items in my cooking pot for simplicity so I don’t have to clean it out.  That said, the maximum amount of boiled water I ever really need at one meal is usually 2 cups or under so my 28 ounces pot has room for reduction.

I didn’t own any Toaks products but I hike with friends who do and they appear to be quality products that serve them well.

So, after looking at several different sizes I settled on the TOAKS Titanium 600ml Pot – which translates to about 20 ounces.  I think this will be a great setup for me because it solves several small issues I had with my Snow Peak 830ml pot.  The smaller 600ml pot should also be very compatible with my Zelph’s Starlyte Burner in conjunction with my Toaks Stove Frame to make an ultralight setup.

Note 3.3oz – according to Toaks specs it’s 3.8oz. I weighed the mesh bag and it weighs .5oz so apparently that would bring it up to 3.8oz

Here are the pluses I found by switching to my TOAKS Titanium 600ml Pot

  1. It is a good 230ml or 7.778 oz less in capacity so I was able to eliminate that extra material and wasted space.
  2. It has measurement graduations on the pot so that solves another issue.
  3. I always got a little burned on the small handles of the mini solo pot – these handles are much longer and easier to grasp.
  4. This smaller size pot will work very well with my tiny Batchstovez stove in conjunction with my Toaks Stove Frame.

The titanium material of the Toaks pot is different both in color and to the touch than the Snow Peak titanium pots I currently owned.  Not to say it’s good or bad but just different.  It’s a darker titanium and has a rougher feel to it.  It almost feels like it has a glass beaded finish to it.  Neither of these affect the way the pot operates in one way or another but it’s just an observation of mine.  In preference I think I like the smoother and lighter finish of the Snow Peak when it all comes down to it.

So far I’m very happy with this pot and have since purchased a TOAKS LIGHT Titanium 550ml Pot in my neverending search to go lighter.  I can’t wait to try them both out on future hikes.

Here are the specs for the 600ml pot taken directly from the Toaks website:

The only question now is whether or not I’ll be able to nest my stove, cup and windscreen inside this smaller pot.  I think I made the right choice for my faster or longer hikes where my main concern is weight reduction and space.

Time will tell if this setup will work for me – I’ll be sure to express that here…

The trail from Bandy Creek out to the Angel Falls Overlook is one of my favorite trails. Partly because it’s so close and also because it’s nothing short of beautiful.
