With a One Hundred Mile John Muir Trail Hike looming on horizon and at the urging of a friend I finally purchased a pair of Drymax Trail Run 1/4 Crew Socks back in the early months of spring 2015.  This turned out to be one of the best purchases I’ve ever made because they all but eliminated wet sweaty feet and blisters for me.  It’s amazing how much better they work for my feet in any weather other than the dead of winter.  Although, I’ve just purchased their cold weather cousins called the Drymax Cold Weather Run Crew Socks so I may be giving up on the merino wool altogether.  I will be testing these cold weather socks out this winter and I’m curious to see how they work out.

Up until purchasing the these socks I had always worn merino socks because they were supposed to be the best thing going with their non-stink factor cushion.  They have never been known to dry extremely fast but they were comfortable and provided good cushion.  I was still stuck with the assumption that they were the best thing going, even though a friend of mine always touted his Drymax socks non-waterproof shoes.  I guess I just wasn’t ready to accept this way of thinking because waterproof breathable shoes were always talked up to be the best thing going and they couldn’t possibly be the cause because they were breathable, right.

Everything changed when I purchased my first pair of Drymax Trail Run 1/4 Crew Socks and a pair of non-waterproof Merrell Moab Hiking Shoes.  I began testing them out on various dry hikes and I was amazed at the difference.  At this point I’ve totally changed over to these socks for all non-winter hikes whether I’m wearing waterproof or non-waterproof socks and they are working like a charm.

Now as far as durability goes I think I can totally vouch for them and say they are pretty tough socks.  Not to mention they are super cheap when compared to a merino sock – approximately 30% cheaper.  My pair sustained a tear on the side from my hike out on the JMT but that’s not bad considering that I wore them for approximately one hundred miles and eight days straight.  Prior to my JMT hike I had worn them on a few two night hikes to make sure they were going to hold up for the big hike.

They are so comfortable and I have since worn another pair and will order at least a few more on top of that in case for some crazy reason they become unavailable.

I purchased mine from Amazon because I haven’t seen them anywhere else.

Here is the cold weather version that I just purchased.  I’m looking forward to trying them out this winter.
