I like my SOBE Elixir, Citrus Energy, 20 Ounce Bottle drink and when I’m done I repurpose the bottle for backpacking. The bottle is surprisingly strong when you compare them to water bottles and not too heavy either. They are, in my opinion better than the water bottles you pay $15 bucks for at the bike shop or outdoor store and more versatile too. Some might think they are too heavy but they are ideal for using as a water bottle when backpacking. I re-function some of the bottles as is or drill the cap and others I cut down into cups.
If just using them as bottles I just clean them; cut the lid ring; cut the label off and use Goo Gone Cleaner to dissolve the adhesive residue that is left behind from the label.
I use a Irwin 10231 Unibit1 1/8-Inch to 1/2-Inch 1/4-Inch Shank Step Drill Bit and turned it by hand in order to get the hole just right size for the Camelbak Pure Flow Replacement Tube and Camelbak Straight Silicone Bite Valve so that it forms a somewhat decent seal and resists easy leakage. I’m still experimenting with this and I may need to add a breather valve or open the hole a little bigger to create a little looser seal.
Ten reasons that make Sobe bottles ideal for backpacking and hiking.
- They are very ridged and will not crush easily.
- They have three deeply indented rings that are ideal for securing shock cord. Unlike other smooth bottles where the shock cord would slide around and not securely seat the bottle.
- It’s easy to use any of the indented rings as a guide to cut the bottle down to a cup.
- They are super cheap so if you lose one you’re not out much. Basically free if you like Sobe drinks.
- At 20 ounces the bottle is just about the perfect size. Not too big and not too small.
- The lids are fairly ridged as well and can be drilled without compromising its integrity.
- Did I mention they are basically free???
- Repurposing them is good for the environment.
- The rings help to hold the bottles and cups
- They last forever!
